Each month, the Region Director, Gary Mink, and the Region Legislator, Duke Jones, write letters for publication in the Outspokin', our Ohio ABATE Magazine. You can stay informed of what's happening in Region 5 by reading those letters right here on the web! Tell your friends about this service! Even if they are not ABATE members, they can stay up-to-date about events, legislation and more by visiting the Region 5 Web Site!

What’s Up Region 5?

They say April showers bring May flowers.  I say it brings May riders to Columbus for the 15th year of the motorcycle Awareness Rally and Parade to the State Capital.  I have spoken to Aces & Eights H-D in Mason, along with Easyriders in Fairfield and the Indian Dealer in Tri-County about our Awareness Rally; all of these dealers are bringing groups to meet up with us at the north bound rest area on I-71 at the 39 mile marker to ride to Columbus with us this year. I am hoping to get some of the other dealers around our area involved also.

Last year, for those of you that couldn’t get your lazy butts out of bed that Saturday morning, you missed one hell of a day of brother and sisterhood! We had over 250 bikes headed to Columbus two by two; our pack stretched out over three miles long.  This year we are hoping to double that size.  Motorcyclists from all over the state will be converging on Columbus Ohio that day.  The Parade down Broad Street to the State Capital is spectacular; both east bound lanes heading to the Capital Bldg. are filled with bikes as far as the eye can see, lead by Columbus’ finest on their motorcycles, while people line the streets waving to us.  The nice thing about the Parade is it is lead by motorcyclists and it keeps moving at the right speed, so no one over heats their rides.  After the Rally, there will be food and fun for all.  We will tell you more about where all the fun and food will be at the Rally.  We will be leaving out of the rest area just north of Rt. 123 at mile marker 34 at 9:00 am sharp.  For those of you like me, who have to have breakfast, a lot of us meet at the Country Kitchen for breakfast, then roll the next mile north to the rest area.  We then meet up with Clinton and Fayette County riders at the Rest Area just north of Rt. 35 at mile marker 67, then it’s on to Columbus for a full day of fun.  So get up that morning and call your brothers and sisters so we can make this the biggest run ever!

This run goes on rain or shine, so don’t let the weather dampen your spirits, because once you get to the Rest Area, you’ll be among the proud Region 5 of SW Ohio.  Some of the other Regions are telling me they are going to kick our butts this year by outnumbering Region 5.  I told them they didn’t have a chance, even on their best day!  So don’t let me down, brothers and sisters, remember; REGION 5 ROCKS!

All of you should have received your Region 5 Events Calendars in the mail, and as you can see, we have a jam-packed season of riding and fun in store for you.  I hope to see all of you out this year at the meetings and at our events supporting ABATE of Ohio, Inc.  In the words of so many ahead of us, Freedom is never free.  Now is the time to come together and really support this organization.  Motorcycling will be over as we know it in about 6 more years if we don’t start now to protect our love of the Wind. Our children and grandchildren may never come to know the Freedoms that we share and love.  All of the Region 5 Officers and I sometimes feel like the Grim Reaper of Motorcycling, but if we all stand together this feeling will go away.  No longer will we feel this way, but we will feel more like its’ protectors instead.. Each and every ABATE member is the Protector of Motorcycling’s future.  Make your mark now!

See ya May 4th,

Gary Mink
